Camiguin’s Best Kept Secret: Guerrera Restaurant
I was craving for some great island food on the island of Camiguin. I noticed that there seems to be a lot of foreigner’s who are either visiting the island or decided to stay on the island for good. While I was on the island, Department of Tourism of Camiguin took me this hidden Thai restaurant on the island.
The Guerrera restaurant which is at Guerrera Rice Paddy Villas and Restaurant is a hidden secret among the locals and you’ll only love this place once you experienced the food itself. The owner loves the word of mouth instead of relying on social media. It’s a short walk to the restaurant and as you enter, you are greeted by the warm staff. I was very surprised on big the restaurant was. They had the kitchen on the right with no glass windows or anything. You can literally see all of the food being cooked.
The tables and chairs are made of wood and very comfy to sit on. The wall art was just as great. The entire place was surrounded by sunflowers and they had a great view of the ocean as well. However, there is a sign that said no recording allowed so I wasn’t allowed to take any videos but I did great some great photos of their unforgettable meals!
I first started off with the starter which is the Lemongrass Thai Basil. Now if you have been to Thailand, this is a must try for tourists. This dish takes me back to Bangkok. The spicy Guerrera-grown spicy fried rice is out of this world!
The main course, in my opinion, had to be the Pad Thai. Now I have taste numerous versions of Pad Thai and also had my first Pad Thai experience in Bangkok. So far, I can’t find a Thai that closely comes to the Pad Thai that I had in Bangkok, Thailand. My expectations were high on this one. To my surprise, the Pad Thai was out of this world. It was in small portions but had this sweet taste of lemon which blends well with the noodles. On top of that it was nice and spicy. It had Thai fried noodles with tamarind egg, spring onions, chilies and garlic. You can choose either shrimp, pork, chicken or vegetables. It was so good that I literally finished two plates!
Next up was the Indonesian Chicken Rendang. This tasted awesome. It almost tasted like their own chicken adobo but with a twist. It had rich coconut “dry” curry with whole Indian spices served with rice. I just needed to get more rice since it was that good!
The Bangkok Pork is another one that I just had to add on the list! If you love pork adobo then you’ll definitely love this dish. It tastes similar to pork adobo but had some sort of secret sauce to it. It is filled with stir-fried pork with garlic, chilies, and Thai basil served with rice. You can literally taste Thailand from that dish!
To finally drown out all the stuff I ate, I had a coke and some Vietnamese coffee. There are also other drinks such as wine and beer which is available. So if you’re looking for some great Asian dishes, Guerrera restaurant is the place to be. You don’t need a reason to experience authentic Thai dishes when you got a homegrown restaurant that serves great Thai and dishes on Camiguin.
