The CAPA Sustainability Award Goes To Cebu Pacific
The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) gave Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB) the Asia Environmental Sustainability Airline/Airline Group of the Year award for being a leader in the sustainability performance of the regional aviation industry.
CEB, the biggest airline in the Philippines, was awarded for the way it keeps integrating different sustainability programs into its day-to-day business and works with industry stakeholders to get other companies in the region to adopt green initiatives.
The award was given to Cebu Pacific’s chief commercial officer, Xander Lao, at the evening gala of the aviation summit on November 3. Lao also talked about CEB’s recovery at a panel.
“It’s an honor to be the first people to get this award,” Lao said. “It should help people realize how important sustainability is and push for it even more.”
Even before the pandemic, CEB started working toward sustainability by buying fuel-efficient planes early on. It plans to run an all-NEO (New Engine Option) fleet by 2028. This will help the airline keep its promise to offer low fares while becoming more efficient and better for the environment.
“The Philippines is one of the countries to be hurt by climate change, so our commitment to being environmentally friendly has grown over time. Cebu Pacific is one of the first low-cost airlines in the world to take steps to cut down on carbon emissions. Mark Cezar, Cebu Pacific’s Chief Financial Officer, said, “We are committed to putting in time and money to become the greenest airline in Asia.”
This year, the airline has also made its efforts to be more environmentally friendly stronger by starting to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in its plane deliveries. On September 28, it made the first commercial flight that was powered by SAF. It is the first commercial airline in the Philippines to use SAF.
CEB plans to keep SAF as a permanent part of its business by getting planes from Airbus. It plans to use SAF on all of its business flights by 2030.
We need our partners to commit to helping us so that we can all succeed and make real change.” Cezar said, “We want everyone to join us on this journey.”
